The benefits of FSC-Certified wood
First things first: FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, which is an international non-profit organization working to promote sustainable forest management and the sustainable use of forest resources worldwide.
When wood products are FSC-certified, it means they come from forests that have been managed with care to protect biodiversity, respect local rights, and support local communities.
FSC certification also involves consideration for the rights and safety of forest workers and minimizing environmental impact during forestry operations.
In other words, when you as a consumer purchase FSC-certified wood products, you can be sure that you are contributing to sustainable forest management and the preservation of forests and their ecosystems.
FSC certification has become a well-known label for those who want to make environmentally friendly choices when purchasing wood products.
FSC'S 10 BASIC PRINCIPLES
FSC applies 10 principles as the basis for its forest certifications globally - regardless of location. Below you can read their own descriptions of the 10 basic principles:
1. Compliance with Laws and FSC Principles
"The forest owner must comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and nationally ratified international treaties, conventions, and agreements."
2. Workers' Rights and Employment Conditions
"The forest owner must maintain and/or improve workers' social and economic well-being."
3. Indigenous Peoples' Rights
"The forest owner must identify and respect the legal and customary rights of indigenous peoples to own, use, and manage land, territories, and resources affected by operational activities."
4. Community Relations
"The forest owner must contribute to maintaining or enhancing the social and economic well-being of local communities."
5. Forest Benefits
"The forest owner must manage the many products and services of the forest property effectively to ensure or enhance economic sustainability and environmental and social benefits."
6. Environmental Values and Impact
"The forest owner must maintain, conserve, and/or restore the ecosystem services and environmental values of the forest property and avoid, restore, or mitigate negative environmental impacts."
7. Planning of Operations
"The forest owner must have an operational plan that reflects the forest owner's policies and objectives. The plan must be commensurate with the scale and intensity of the operation and the associated risks. The operational plan must be kept up-to-date with information from monitoring to ensure flexible operations that can be adjusted to actual conditions. Documentation of planning and procedures must be sufficient to instruct personnel, inform affected stakeholders, and justify operational decisions."
8. Monitoring and Assessment
"The forest owner must be able to document that monitoring and evaluation to achieve operational goals and consequences of operations are taking place. The effort must be commensurate with the scale and intensity of the operation and the risks associated with the operation. The purpose is to implement flexible operations."
9. High Conservation Values
"The forest owner must conserve and/or promote high conservation values within the forest property by following the precautionary principle."
10. Implementation of Operations
"Operational activities performed by or for the forest owner on the forest property must be selected and carried out in accordance with the forest owner's economic, environmental, and social policies and objectives and in accordance with FSC's principles and criteria.
